The repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is a DISGRACE that cannot stand!
The Left hoped that by defining homosexuality as an orientation that cannot be changed, rather than a chosen behavior as has been recognized for millenia, they could exploit the goodwill of the civil rights struggle. Civil rights, like feminism, is a positive philosophy when promulgated by persons of integrity with no hidden agendas. However, those of us who were around in those times, or who study real history, know there were many communists and America-haters therein marching with genuine people of good will. It is not the conservatives with resume credits we hear from today, but Charlie Rangel and Jesse Jackson – those who exploit their past. They are exploiters first, and not those persons of consistent character.
“Gay rights” has been difficult to fight against because most Americans have always been tolerant. Most Americans weren’t out spraying black people with fire hoses or wearing sheets. In fact, as I research my Southron genealogies, along with outrages I come across stories which run counter to the all-pervasive “rabid racists” myth. The trouble with human nature, then as now, is that many believe what they wish, for good or ill, depending upon their choice – and not the truth.
“Being gay” in a heterosexual world is not the same as being black in a whites-dominated society. One could easily find black communities that were indistinguishable from white communities in the 1950s. But look at the Castro and West Hollywood – not the same as heterosexual communities. There are ex-gays; there are no ex-blacks. A black person can genuinely marry a white person and still be black. A gay person cannot genuinely marry a straight person and still genuinely be gay.
What’s my background? I grew up in California, and once admired Harvey Milk. While I still admire Harvey (the Harvey of The Life and Times of Harvey Milk, not the revisionist versions), I now see where I went wrong in my thinking, and accept that martyed man’s achievements, both good and mistaken. I wish I could answer Harvey’s argument in the Proposition 6 debates. Proposition 6 was one of the 1970s-era California ballot initiatives which would have prevented openly-gay teachers from teaching in schools — how things have changed in 40 years! (As Barack Obama proved, change is not always a good thing!) Anita Bryant and Phyllis Schlafly were two who stood up against this; some of us are old enough to remember what happened to Anita Bryant as a result of her conservative stand.
Harvey is memorialized in The Life and Times as pointing out that he became gay even though he was raised in a militantly heterosexual world. His conclusion was the lie that gay people are born gay and this cannot be changed. I would answer today that we are all born sinful creatures. The fact that we are born so does not mean God intends for us to choose this, let alone justify such contrary to history and mature reflection. For people who struggle with this issue or who have friends and family who do, there are very good resources out there on the issue.
We see what is happening to this country, as people who try to live decently, or who are committed Christians, or who are patriotic Americans become objects of ridicule by the media. By their fruits ye shall know them… I don’t seen the homosexual agendists out there promoting tolerance of Christians and the abstinent. Rather, each and every one of them intend to divide – to call us the “haters”, not taking the log out of their own eye. We need to remember America’s enemies – including the devil and his minions – would like to weaken and destroy this country. Harvey – in real life – was the homosexual Ghandi or MLK Jr. He was martyed for it and now he is exploited. Instead, there are Rosie O’Donnell and her Leftist comrades (pun intended). America is not stronger for “diversity” and satire. She is stronger due to God-fearing, genuinely honest, mature, committed Americans of faith who live humbly and seriously, then, now, ALWAYS…
Even if I still believed in “equal rights” for homosexuals, I could not deny that elevating a social experiment ahead of our military is a good idea. When one considers that society at large has not resolved the issue – I would suggest cannot – it is an assault on America and nothing less. With all that is wrong with our government and economy, a lame duck Congress are not the wisest captains of our course. The agendists argue that blacks serving equally in the military was such a social experiment; but as I note above, it is not the same thing – and we all must say so before such is prosecuted as a hate crime.
The more we speak up about the Emperor’s New Clothes, i.e., the Left’s blatant pandering to a few of their well-off donors (no matter the effects on this country and our defenses), the more we may persuade others who still debate what is the right thing to do and believe.
This is why young people have been misled and are being used: they are young. They are ready to believe in “progressive” ideas, no matter history, human nature and the comprehension such requires for mature government. Military leaders from Washington to Caesar have written about sexual openness in the military, and how such has no place therein. We have evaded confronting the young with their ignorance since the 1960s. We must step up and git ‘r done. Even our Founders, who included many young idealists (i.e., Hamilton, Jay, Burr, the Adams brothers et al.), may have been young. But they also had been schooled in Latin and the history of Rome, the philosophy of Locke and Hume, the Junto of Franklin and related improvement societies. Reality TV, cell phones and iPods do not an informed electorate make. To me, one of the greatest achievements of our Founders was the persuasion on the merits via the best-selling and discussed Federalist Papers.
With regard to military service, whatever happened to the plan of abstinence? A mature Christian, of course, will not be having sex outside of marriage. I argue this was a source of strength for this country, as THIS was the ideal for centuries when we thrived. Even though most did not live as long, and death rates much higher, most postponed marriage and family a lot longer than today. With homosexuals in our schools and our media promoting “equality” and “self-expression”, where is the tolerance and fairness for focusing one’s talents and energy on the mission at hand?
If the latter is not sufficient fulfillment, one has no business in a volunteer military. Today’s American heroes are many in our military, who know this focus and its power. Unfortunately, I personally know of agendists who signed up beginning in the 1960s with infiltration, exploitation and demoralization in mind, not patriotic defense.
Fighting for our country is not only about attending tea parties and studying the Constitution, positive enough steps. It is about modeling commitment and maturity, and fighting the creeping corruption of those who would weaken us intellectually, socially, spiritually and morally. Young people, do not go down the long road without knowing more about these issues and what you are choosing. And we maturer types must fight the good fight more effectively if we are to save this country.
